Such a sweet memory. Thanks for the back story, Sue. Adorable photo. I remember Paul and Ruth, though I lost track of them in the late 1980s. Why don't I remember Jeff? Was he of the Bahá'í community? Was he a friend of Michael?

Jeff was part of the Boulder Creek Baha'i Community, but he lived in the DeFay's barn for about a year. He was busy studying to finish school and probably didn't spend too much time in the county-wide community. I don't remember a Michael.

Michael was a locksmith and a good friend of the other Jeff who lived in the Aptos area, both very active in the community.

Oh now I remember him. And Jeff Rhodes too. Didn't Michael stutter really badly and he remedied that by singing his prayers? And when he struggled to talk, John Scott would say, "Sign it, Mike, sing it." BTW, John Scott runs an insurance agency up here in Minden.

A great read, Sue. The ending is so perfect for me today. I needed a happy ending. And yes, absolutely like the rest of your friends here, I wish you and Jeff a very Happy Anniversary. Emojis galore not possible here, but you know the ones. Constance

What a delightful story, Sue, beautifully written! If you think about it, Independence Day is about independence and freedom within a union of equals, just like a good marriage. Happy Anniversary to you and Jeff!

Thank you, Portia. It was fun to relive that era of our lives and look back across the years of struggle and triumph over the adversities that life presents to all of us.
