I live down the coast from Boulder Creek, and within my own Redwood forest, but in a rustic cabin with my husband. I would do well to rid myself of my excess “stuff”…we are making an honest effort this year to do just that. I am happiest in the little living room, with a fire in the pot bellied stove, tapping away on my computer, to writing prompts from my writing group, (which I joined with the encouragement of my Sister-in-Law, Sharron B.). What a way to spend a cloudy day! I enjoyed your story…I wonder if your library man still walks HWY. 9…🌿

I wonder if he does too. He was about 40 ish at the time, so that would make him a real codger by now. The old man in the woods. There were some pot growers in that area too that were threatening a family who purchased their "dream home" near that Easter Seals camp. It became their nightmare. I hope the Redwood Man wasn't harmed by the pot growers.

There is a great deal to be said for living in a little cabin in the redwoods. Ours was a cutie and my daughter thrived in the home school in Boulder Creek. The fire that went through there a few years ago, however, scraped the lot clean. It's weird to look at the road photos taken by Google. At least the redwood ring in the backyard is still there as is the Scotch Broom. We moved to Truckee in 1996, then Minden, NV n 2011. Don't think we'll be moving again unless it's feet first.

I can just see you writing away near the potbellied stove. Aptos? LaSelva Beach?

Things change, and the fires wiped away so much beauty, but it is coming back…

It will not be the same, but the people are different, too. I live in Aptos, near Cabrillo College. Fire haunts my nightmares, but, other than the old family cabin here in the 1920’s, there has not been a big fire near this property. I am knocking on wood…redwood. 💕

I love this reminiscence, Sue -- such nostalgia for the era. I love this place where I live, but I could not live in a tree. One small room with a bathroom attached, clean running water, a bed, a ream of paper and a couple of pencils. Maybe bread and peaches. I don't need much. Thanks for asking and making me think.

LOL! Indeed, at our advanced maturity, we've learned what we need and what fills our desires. I too would like a small room somewhere with one enormous chair, a heater, a window looking upon a garden, and my laptop. My whole life is on my laptop. Maybe a stray cat to wander in for a cuddle, but he'll be responsible for his own needs.

Just missing one thing in your scenario. Me living next door in the same kind of place.

One of us would be a bad influence on the other. I suspect it would be you. You could always count on me to bail you out of jail.
