In the Great Basin of the American West, a tight community of Basques immigrated from the Pyrenees, a mountain range between Spain and France. Every summer, they celebrate culture with festivals.
Thanks for this post, Sue! Very interesting. I imagine you know this, but there are about 20,000 Basques living in California - many of them in the Central Valley ( Los Banos, Bakersfield, Inland Empire, etc) but also in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I have always been fascinated by their culture - the history, the resilience, the music and dancing, the food..
True. When I first moved to Santa Cruz, I met a Basque woman up in San Francisco, a friend of a friend, whose family came from Spain. She teased me to my husband, Jeff's, family were from France, the wrong side of the Pyrenees.
I've been seeing those on the FB page Sheep Wagon Feber and thought some would be displayed during this festival. I'll have to ask around today. We're enjoying not only the festival and the food, but we took a ride around Boise to explore the neighborhoods and found it to be a beautiful city. Last time I was here was when I was eight, so it's changed a tad.

A fascinating post, Sue - I've learned so much! And wow, that paella..... yummy! 😋
Hey, that is our Boise.
There is quite a market in these parts for Basque sheep herder wagons, where they are called WinneBascos.
