I think home schooling usually is a bad substitute for public education. It deprives the student of socialization with larger groups and, from what I have witnessed personally, leaves the student with academic deficits. Of course, exceptions are always possible.

It depends on what kind of socialization is derived from public education. Back in the 50s, we were taught manners, social interaction behaviors, and other such lessons right alongside the science, math, reading, and writings, etc. I don't know if that's true anymore. The violence that is happening in schools and, from my experience, the teachers' reluctance or inability to punish kids who are violent is perpetuating a very toxic atmosphere. When Val reported being bullied by some older boys, her teacher called her a drama queen, that it wasn't cool to be a tattletale. Pardon me, but are we the Mafia? What's the positive alternative for Val to use in dealing with bullies? Teach, don't hurl insults. What in the hell does that teach a kid? And if that's the socialization that is being allowed in the school, no wonder we live in one of the most socially toxic countries on the planet.

God bless the teachers. And we are ALL teachers.
