Oh, such a beautifully-written account of your 'leaf-peeping journey', Sue - and as for the pictures, both of you, just wow!

(Behind on my reading - treating myself to a well-earned catch-up.)

Thank you, Rebecca. It's true, that scenic route is close at hand and our favorite one to drive. And it's changing all the time.

Meanwhile, Substack provides all the reading material I can possibly handle. It's overwhelming, isn't it. And such a variety of awesome creatives. I've learned so much from you all and feel I've made some good friends. My afternoons have become devoted to living in Substackland.

It's lovely to have such beauty within striking distance - perfect! The colours here are beautiful, too. Yesterday - a grey, rainy day - I walked into my parents' kitchen into a GLOW of sunshine outside the far window. It wasn't sunshine, though, but their beautiful ginkgo - which is bright, pure yellow all over - it lit up my heart! The sun came out later and just bounced off the leaves - it was absolutely glorious!

You're right, keeping up with reading can so easily feel overwhelming. I would love to get into a better routine with reading all of this lovely stuff on Substack - say, half an hour every single day - but instead I find myself thinking 'no, I want all the time in the world to immerse myself in it, so I'll wait until THEN' - but which day ever provides me with 'all the time in the world', hmm?! 🤣

LOLOLOL

I've been meaning to ask: where and how do you find and insert all your emojis? Many's the time.....

Expand full comment

Ooooh, well, I can help you there! ⬇️

Windows: Press the Windows key + . (period) or Windows key + ; (semicolon).

Mac: Press the Command key + Control + Spacebar.

In both cases - voilà, the emoji menu! 🙌

Look out, though, Sue - there’ll be no stopping you! 🤣

Well darn! the commands brought up the vast array of emojis, but how do I install them on the post? fnooh! 😞 AHA! There it is. I was trying to enter it for the "heart/like" button. Hmmmmm.

🙌 Awesome emojiing, Sue! 😁

The stream of CA refugees from SoCal has hardly abated over the years, but once this ridiculous election is finished, it's going to become a torrent. Give me a call and we'll make up that back bedroom.

Hah! Thanks. We shall see. However the election ends, it will surely end in chaos. You and I are probably safe, as long as we do not follow the news. I am so glad I threw away my TV seven years ago. I don't have to hear about the catastrophes, man-made or otherwise. I prefer to worry about things I actually have some control over and can do something about. It is enough.

Yes, we ditched our TV years ago too and haven't "listened" to the news since then. Internet news sources, however, can be just as nightmarish while causing a shared angst and anger among the commenters. What poison this is! Yet, I scroll away, hypnotized. Thank god, for Subtackers who infuse me with a dose of sanity and intelligence. And like you, I've fallen back into my own bubble, staying out of the political stuff of my community. Just do the errands and take care of what I can handle. It's all we can safely and competently do.

I am posting something tomorrow that is a very thinly disguised political commentary. I sure hope my readers know I am kidding. I have to trust they will, knowing me.

Trust us. Those who get it will appreciate your bravery. I've been quite a coward with my political rants and have trashed most of them. We need to be brave. What can readers do other than unsubscribe. And it's their loss.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to another one of your great bus ride stories. I'm wondering what happened to that young could who discovered each other on the bus. The dark man and the albino woman. Great story. I hope they're still walking tete-e-tete.

Thank you Sue. That’s my second favorite part of Nevada, next to those endless sagebrush expanse in the north, when not a single tree or person blocks that vast, silent solitude.

The first time I drive south toward Fallon, Hawthorne, and then up into the mountains you pictured, I found a whole new perspective on Nevada. Others are welcome to Las Vegas and Reno, but I love those mountains and deserts.

And thank the gods Nevada has more of those mountains and deserts than bright lights and mayhem.

Between snowdrift, and desert, with a lovely image! You were tempted to just sit and stare. i suggest that you do that, maybe for hours. This is a lovely essay, Sue.

As for 100-year-old mining towns, that’s not so ancient, given that we approach three-quarters of a century ourselves.

True about the age of towns, Fran. The oldest maybe 150, but the Old West kept being wild into the 20th Century. If I recall, Jarbidge was the site of the last stagecoach holdup in 1911. And most towns boomed and busted within fifty years, all in the search for Paradise. (BTW, that's another little burg north of Winnemucca that still hangs in there to this day.

For some reason, I am reminded of Jerome, and old mining town in Arizona, that Robert and I visited with his relatives who live in Phoenix. We went to Sedona, too. It had a synagogue that had a really spiritual feel to it.

I'm glad to see some of these mining towns finding new ways to hang in there. As for a sacred or spiritual feel, when Jeff and I visited the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, I walked out and had to sit in the garden to retain the intense feeling I got from looking at her paintings. I didn't want to leave and lose it on the street somewhere. It took me quite a while.
