A shop burnt down today…
Just a few blocks away on Gordon Street
Consuming classic cars and tools
Flames licked the shingles of the house
Leaned into the neighbor's garage
Like a greedy child wanting
One more cookie.
Garden hoses spit useless dribbles
Two dozen firefighters fought
For nearly an hour until
Only smoldering embers remained.
The paper ran the story on page one
With a photo of glowing smoky light.
We sat in our chairs, earphones
Keeping our separate movies
To ourselves. We barely noticed
Each others' faces smiling
At whatever scene tickled our fancy
Much less the inferno rendering
Someone's dreams to cinders.
"... We sat in our chairs, earphones, Keeping our separate movies To ourselves. We barely noticed..." And there you have how we live today, Sue. Media plugged into our heads, fast asleep. And the worst thing? We are choosing it, doing it to ourselves. Yikes. Thank you.
Thank for documenting this multi-layered tragedy with keen observations.
