Trekking Walmart
Maybe some of you older Substackers will remember the "mall walking" craze a few decades back. With Fitbits, big box stores prove to be good places to get in your all-important steps.
I hiked Walter's Wiggles once
Zigzagging up the red cliff trail
Toward Angel's Landing.
The daughter scurried to the top
While husband and I drowsed
Among other spent souls
Satisfied to remain at Scouts.
A decade gone and I still hike
Avoiding chasms of cheap clothes
Bypassing fabrics
Yarn, beads, and watercolors.
My goal is to press
Through the labyrinth
Of dairy, meat, and produce.
Foraging among the freezers
I pick only the edibles I can mix
With something rich and spicy.
The cereal aisle is a boulder crawl.
Liquor heightens the risk of falling.
I browse among the bread, but
I won't go near the baked goods
Too perilous for my balance.
Once I reach the pinacle
I return through the maze.
Electronics and Gardening beckon
The trail to Camping
Is closed to me these days.
But it's the books
The bin of novels
That beg me to abide
In this wilderness.
I must not rest though.
I must push onward.
My feet hurt, and besides
It's another mile to the car.

This was great! You really capture the insanity we have inflicted on ourselves with big box stores and all the rest.
