What a beautiful bird in flight! You’d never know their potential, when they’re bunched up on a rock by the water…then they just unfurl that graceful slender body and wings, and just glide! I’ll bet your daughter was equally stunned! Love this tribute, Sue!! 💞
Oh good, you could imagine the grace of the take off and the flight. It WAS stunning. That bird must be the epitome of perfect aerodynamic design. Thank you, Sharon.
Just curious- was that what we call Westlake pond/park off High/Moore Streets here in Santa Cruz? My husband and I have taken our grandchildren there to fish or play at the nice playground.
They are marvelous birds! They look quite prehistoric in flight. And their call is unmistakable. A very loud "reeeeech, reeeeech! A group of them used to fly over my house at sunset every day - it was in their flight path to the lagoon and the eucalyptus trees in which they slept. I looked forward to it every day. Thanks for this lovely reminder.

Yes, that's the one. I didn't know the name of it. Thank you. Now I can edit the piece with the name.

I've never heard a great blue heron reeeeeeech, but I'll be it rakes up your spine like nails on the blackboard. My heart stops every time I see one.
Me too. Magnificent beasts!
