Division of Labor
It comes and goes
one day’s better than another
he takes care of me
I take care of him
He makes the money
I spend it
He fixes the cars
I fix the meals
Then we go out to dinner.
He loves airplanes
I dabble in paints
We fly over hills
I paint watercolor mountains
He travels to find work
I stay home to clear snow
Keep the fire burning
Embers die if we don’t add wood
He keeps us going
I keep him going
He makes me laugh
and tells me about
internal combustion engines
investment strategies
computer language syntax
I hope he doesn’t quiz me.
He listens to my ideas
and tolerates my whining
Sometimes I think of running away
but who would be my foil
Who would open doors for me
and keep me
looking beyond myself?
